Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the global 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
