An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, based on recent findings.
Investigational Drug Gaining Traction Via Social Media
Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning properties. Viewers are urged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.
Active Trade on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a robust trade exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” images, injection guides and assertions of next-day British shipping. Vendors market the substance there before redirecting customers to other platforms for transactions.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
This medication is an experimental injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could help individuals reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Voice Concerns
However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unapproved medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting products of unknown origin.
Some professionals stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Implementation
Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Some influencers attempt to circumvent the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled drug, but promotion and supply can still violate medicines, advertising, and consumer regulations, risking fines, prosecution or imprisonment.
Platform Response and Content Removal
According to TikTok, the platform has taken down violative content and banned related keywords and query recommendations. The organization said it was committed to maintaining the service secure and investing in strengthening compliance measures.
Online Marketplace Operations
Investigations also discovered groups with up to 9,000 members selling the experimental drug using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of members, populated with images of weight loss, positive testimonials and step-by-step guides for mixing or injecting at residence.
After minutes of entering one community, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where most purchases take place. The vendor sent an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within two days. When asked whether the product was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None inquired about body mass, health issues or past usage.
Product Details and Pricing
Within these communities, messages display black plastic parcels with Royal Mail labels, claiming to include fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors typically sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a injector should last, vendors give conflicting answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Security Measures
A representative for the messaging service said it actively monitored harmful content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Expert Warnings
“People are administering materials they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these online versions may not include what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
A medical professional of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to current cost increases for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are turning to social media. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she said.
Her team has previously seen individuals harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Manufacturer Position
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet authorized … may subject patients to potentially serious medical dangers”.
