A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the flight.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.

She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
