The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
