Based on data from Israel, no fewer than 98 Palestinians have perished while detained beginning in October 2023. A human rights group based in Israel has indicated that the real toll is likely considerably larger, due to many of unaccounted for people originating in Gaza.

Despite the total number of deaths charted being significantly higher than earlier projections, it probably does not reflect the entire scope of Palestinian casualties, according to the leader of the prisoner monitoring division.

“Even though we are presenting proof for a greater figure of fatalities than once estimated, this is not a full picture,” he explained. “We are confident that there are even now people who lost their lives in confinement that we don’t know about.”

Civilian Deaths

Confidential government records suggests that the vast majority of Palestinian detainees from Gaza who lost their lives in jail were civilians, based on a related inquiry.

In May of 2024, a military intelligence database tracking all fighters in Gaza, a roster of over 47,000 listed people, listed only 21 deaths in confinement. By that date, 65 Gazans from Gaza had perished in prison.

Prison Situation

The systematic abuse came with a disturbing rise in fatalities recorded across no fewer than 12 detention centers in Israel. During the previous decade prior to the conflict, there were usually a couple deaths a year.

“This does not represent just an individual case occasionally. It is systemic and it is likely to persist,” a representative said, partially due to the fact there is a environment of virtual exemption from consequences for harming and abusing Palestinian individuals.

Just one case of attacking detainees has reached litigation, with the military personnel sentenced to half a year. Notable Incidents

Some deaths in custody have been high profile, for instance a 50-year-old medical chief who perished in confinement after four months in detention.

An inmate detained alongside the victim reported that he was taken to the exercise area by prison staff just prior to his death, visibly injured and naked from the lower body. His remains remains unreleased to Gaza.

Further inmates who perished in Israeli custody stay unnamed. Correctional authorities and defense forces supplied researchers with the number of casualties in custody, and limited further data including the site where they died, but excluding the detainees’ identities.

Identification Challenges

Regarding 21 occurrences, mainly individuals from Gaza, investigators were unable to match the minimal data given by officials to a fatality registered by advocacy bodies, via accounts from released detainees or reporting in the press.

The detainees’ families could be unaware about their loved ones’ deaths as well, as Israel has impeded efforts to monitor Palestinian individuals it is confining.
